When repointing or tuckpointing is needed to repair mortar, it is important to get a repair mortar that is designed for matching the existing mortar to ensure a better bond, match color, match composition formula and ratio, and compressive strength or crushing pressure of mortar. These will all affect the quality of the repair, durability of the repairs, the appearance of the restoration, and can prevent re-cracking, spalling, popping, or additional damage to the bricks.

Matching brick mortar for repairs is often where masonry contractors go wrong. It has become a common practice to only attempt matching mortar color. This practice might work in cases where the mortar type is known, and the brick repair mortar is mixed from base elements to the formula for the known mortar type.
This is rarely the case in mortar repair. Most brick masons don't create their own mortar mix, but rather use small portions of a premix mortar that requires the total content of each bag to produce the specified mortar type. When these bags are broken, so are the ratios of their binders and it changes the mortar type. This results in an unknown mortar type used for repointing, and tends to cause damage or crack again.
The process for brick mortar matching requires a known mortar type and the mortar mix formula before it can be adjusted to match the mortar color.

Tuckpointing mortar is generally mixed in small portion that are made per the formula of the known existing mortar type.
If you have an unknown mortar mix, the only way to be sure in matching the mortar for brick repair is to get the mortar tested. Through analyzing samples of the old mortar, the mortar composition formula is provided, and can be adjusted in tones and pigments to match the mortar color for tuckpointing mortar cracking and replacing crumbling mortar joints.

Custom Matched Brick Repair Mortar
Our custom matched brick repair mortar or pre-matched tuckpointing mortar mix is custom blended to match the formula of your existing mortar. As needed, mortar composition testing may be required to determine the mortar composition formula of the original mortar before color matching is possible, then bags of custom mortar mix can be made for your brick repair or you can use the formula to make your own repointing mortar mix.

The cost of brick repair mortar is $75 per box of pre-matched mortar. Each box of brick repair mortar contains 2 one gallon bags of custom tuckpoint mortar mix.
Custom brick repair mortars require a formula for matching, and may require having the mortar analyzed and a mortar color match.
Composition analysis costs $350 to get the base mortar formula for the mortar type determined, and color matching is an additional $150. If you already know the mortar type/formula, you will only need the color portion of mortar matching ($150).
Each bag of brick repair mortar mixes with about 2.5 gallons sand and about a gallon of water to produce approximately 4 gallons of pointing mortar for your masonry repair. 1-2 boxes are generally enough for most brick repair projects.
